In the Gospel of Matthew - following his baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting for forty days and nights, Jesus becomes hungry. The devil approaches him and tempts him three times: first, to turn stones into bread to satisfy his hunger; second, to throw himself off the pinnacle of the temple to test God's protection; and third, to worship the devil in exchange for all the kingdoms of the world. Each time, Jesus responds with Scripture, resisting the devil's temptations. Finally, the devil departs, and angels come to minister to Jesus. This passage illustrates Jesus' victory over temptation his reliance on Scripture and his obedience to God's will.
